Bccma Northern Championships

The BCCMA Northern Championships held at Nuneaton, Coventry was a great event this year with Nam Yang sweeping a total of 26 medals from the event; 12 of which were Gold! "The camaraderie was excellent" If you want to compete next time but you're not sure how you would get there, don't worry, Nam Yang lay on a minibus. On arrival, everyone was in eager anticipation as we checked in and registered ourselves for our respective events.

After weighing in, everyone warmed up and did their final practice before the event opened with adult female Qingda & the veterans Qingda.

The events continued throughout the day without too much delay. The atmosphere remained positive among our members and the support un-equalled.

It was very encouraging to see the support from our younger members' families; very much appreciated and a very big thank you.

"In addition, a special thank you to Warren Mead School Banstead, Therfield School Leatherhead & Glyn technology school Ewell, for their support and assistance to our members who attend the above mentioned educational establishments".

The traditional category was quite well supported, given that it was only the second time in operation. The panel of judges worked well together, and the category showed the promise of things to come in traditional Kung-Fu competition entries in the UK. Look out for dates of further competitions on the front of this Newsletter. They are great fun, motivate you, step up your training and set a standard for Chinese martial arts in the UK!

Nam Yang Lions & Dragons at Buckingham Palace For Traditional Welcome for President Hu Jintao of China

Celebrity performances are always a great way of raising the profile of martial arts in the U.K and celebrity parties don't get much bigger than a state banquet for the president of China, hosted by HRH the Queen and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace! Clearly events like this constitute a coming together of East and West. Martial arts are beyond doubt the best example of Eastern culture being adopted and valued in the West so it is great to see martial arts groups being invited to demonstrate their skills to celebrate such occasions.

Lion and dragon dances are traditionally performed only by kung fu groups and bring luck and prosperity. They are a must to welcome celebrities and V.I.P.s. Nam Yang Pugilistic Association is becoming well recognised as one of Britain's foremost kung fu groups with a continually expanding portfolio of celebrity performances including Prince Edward, Ken Hom, Fern Britain/Philip Shoefield, Ken Livingstone and Gloria Huniford to name but a few. Nam Yang always perform at the big Chinese New Year celebrations in Trafalgar Square, displaying Chinese martial arts and Chi Kung as well as lion and dragon dance.

The events outside the palace kicked off with a parade down the Mall by two dragons - one on either side - supported by the association's lions and banners. This was actually featured on 'Have I Got News For You' although the presenter had problems reading the word 'Pugilistic'. And we thought that they were all supposed to be clever on that programme!

The main performance took place on a rather posh looking grassy area just in front of the palace. It lasted a full hour with lions and dragons alternating over that time. Five lions or two dragons performed at any one time to traditional music played on drum, cymbals and gong. During this time president Hu arrived with the royals, as did the numerous guests for the state banquet - mostly politicians and ambassadors, although it was impossible to get

close to them because of extremely tight police security measures. In fact the performance was originally scheduled for late morning as president Hu and the Queen travelled from Houseguards Parade, down the Mall to the palace in the royal coach. Fortunately someone had the sense to realise that if dragons panicked the horses drawing the royal coach, a major diplomatic incident might ensue! The event was sponsored by the London Chinatown association who work closely with the Chinese Embassy to promote Chinese culture and interests in the U.K. They generously laid on a Chinese banquet for the performers after the event, many of whom had travelled in from Nam Yang martial arts groups as far a field as Marlborough, Portsmouth and Brighton.

Chinese New Year 2006

This years celebrations will be the biggest to date. Parades around London Chinatown and down charring Cross Rd to Trafalgar Square. Dragon dance and martial arts demonstrations in Trafalgar Square.

Chinese T.V will be sending a large film crew to cove the event. Their work will be screened to an estimated 600 million people in China as well as on Chinese cable/satellite channels around the world.

Please support the event by joining our team on the day. We are always short of people. We have been told that the martial arts demo must be better than previous years so I will be lining up a number of rehearsals!

Competition Judging/Organising

We experienced a lot of problems with biased judging of the Chinese boxing at the last competition. To help overcome these problems, the organisers have offered to put on a free judge course at our martial arts centre in the hopes that they can train up some better judges! I have some interest already. If you would like to train to be a judge/referee, you will find that it is interesting and you will be helping our club. Please register your interest with me (Iain).

I also need to recruit a small team to help with organising the competitions.

Thank you
